Course Descriptions

It is a prime goal of SharkSchool™ to introduce as many different shark species as possible to divers and snorklers. But different species demand different approaches. Bull sharks are often best explored through snorkeling, sandtigers through SCUBA diving, while white sharks are best watched from a boat or from a cage (sorry, no free diving allowed).

Then there are places where it is suitable to have a land based operation with daily trips to explore sharks, while others are only accessible by live-aboards. As different as approaches can be, so are the different needs of the divers and snorklers. Some may want to learn to interact with sharks, while others are solely interested to take a picture and correct it on the computer - if necessary -, while still others want to focus on one particular shark species or topic. SharkSchool™ offers a variety of courses to satisfy the needs of everybody, and if there is still a demand for something different, it will be created.

Courses Information

Interaction

This workshop focuses on the interaction with different shark species. It will be taught what to look for when facing a shark, which factor(s) influence(s) the situation the most and how to interpret an encounter. Everything learnt in the class room will also be tried with and among free living sharks, and situations changed to give a thorough introduction to different scenarios.

Watching / Observing

This workshop primarily revolves around white sharks and a true interacting can't be allowed (for insurance and safety reasons) - hence cage observation only. Nevertheless during this workshop it is offered to snorkel / dive in kelp forests to look for other resident shark species. But since the focus point are white sharks, the classroom sessions will concentrate on that species, and to a (much) lesser extent on the shark species found in the kelp.

Photography

Taking good photographs of sharks depends on two main factors (beside others, of course): "getting" the right moment in a particular situation and the correct shutter speed & aperture. The former can be learnt by understanding the swim pattern of sharks under different scenarios, the latter by mastering essential aspects of digital underwater photography. Nevertheless, sometimes neither makes it "happen" and the use of programs like Photoshop® is needed. This workshop covers the correct use of shutter speeds, aperture, histograms etc., gives a detailed introduction and application of many features of Photoshop®, and will also teach how swim patterns and approach behavior of sharks have to be interpreted to make the picture "happen."

Special: Shark accidents, their analyses and reconstructions

This workshop is entirely dedicated to shark bites and their anatomy. Classroom sessions focus on the foundations necessary to understand and be able to interpret accidents. Part of it will also deal with famous accidents of the past and their re-evaluations. Lab sessions deal with the analyses of wounds (models) e.g. their measurements, interpretation and comparison with respective jaws, and then use of computer based programs to compare tooth patterns with the "wounds" in question. The "field sessions" focus on factors influencing the behavior of sharks, their evaluation (video analysis) and interpretation. Daily diving and snorkeling with different shark species are also part of the workshop.
